Why check your AI visibility at all?
More customers now ask an AI assistant for a recommendation before they open Google. When someone types "best roofer near me" into ChatGPT, the answer is a short list of names, not ten links. If your business is not on that list, you are invisible to that customer, even if you rank well on Google.
The good news is that this is easy to test yourself, and most of your competitors have never checked.
How do I test it myself?
- Write three customer questions. For example: "Who are the best water damage companies in Gainesville?", "Who would you recommend for an emergency pipe burst near Ocala?" and "What do you know about [your business name]?"
- Ask each one in ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google. Turn on web search where it is optional, because that is how current local businesses get found.
- Note three things: were you named, who was named instead of you, and which websites the answer cited.
- Repeat it a few times. AI answers change from one ask to the next, so one test is a snapshot, not a verdict.
Short on time? Our free AI Visibility Check runs three questions like these for you in under a minute.
Why would an AI skip my business?
- Your pages do not answer questions cleanly. AI favors short, direct answers it can quote.
- Your business details are inconsistent. Different names, phone numbers or addresses across your site, Google Business Profile and directories make you hard to trust.
- No structured data. Schema markup tells machines exactly who you are, what you do and where.
- Thin service-area content. If you never say you serve a city, the AI has no reason to connect you to it.
- Few outside mentions. Reviews, local directories and press give AI independent reasons to name you.
What should I fix first?
Start with the basics that also help your Google rankings: make sure your name, address and phone number match everywhere, add an FAQ section to your main service pages with plain-language answers, add Organization and LocalBusiness schema, and keep your Google Business Profile complete and active. Then build outward with reviews and local mentions. Our guide to AEO and GEO walks through the full checklist.
Can anyone guarantee an AI will recommend me?
No. Nobody controls what an AI says, and anyone promising a guaranteed spot is guessing. What you can do is remove the reasons you would be skipped and make your business the easiest one to understand and quote. If you want that done for you, that is exactly what our AI Visibility Audit covers.
Frequently asked questions
How do I see if ChatGPT recommends my business?+
Ask ChatGPT, with web search on, the questions your customers ask in your city, such as who the best company is for your service. Note whether you are named and which sites it cites, and repeat a few times because answers vary.
Is there a free tool to check AI visibility?+
Yes. Platypus Media offers a free AI Visibility Check that asks ChatGPT three realistic customer questions about your market and shows whether your business is named.
Does ranking on Google mean ChatGPT will recommend me?+
Not automatically. Strong rankings help, but AI answers also depend on how clearly your content answers questions, your structured data and mentions from other trusted sources.
How long does it take to show up in AI answers?+
Fixes to your own site can be picked up within weeks, while earning citations elsewhere often takes a few months. Track it monthly to see movement.
